Ate Me Up

Growing up, we were taught to be thankful for what we got Never envy. Because jealousy leaves the heart to rot And relationships in a frenzy. So, I didn’t. I never envied another. Until I saw you. Sitting on that bench. I started to envy the wind that coursed through your hair. The leaves that brushed your skin ever so slightly. And before I knew it. I was jealous of every lifeform that called you ‘theirs’. I wanted to see you every day, just like they did. I wanted to hug you, just like they did. I wanted to be able to love you freely, just like they did. Jealousy ate me, devoured me and I let it. Because if it was for you, I would surrender to it.
