At the End There Was a Smile

I saw her as the sun set She was standing there Not noticing me Naked she stood there Staring straight ahead She never moved I watched her She looked at the sky Maybe wondering what was beyond What Heaven was like She never knew what life could be Her face was worn and tired Beaten by age and life She knew nothing but pain She didn’t want to remember But she had no choice She held a picture To precious to throw away It was her life She never looked at it She held it close to her breasts There was a breeze It rolled across her face Carrying the scent of distant flowers Maybe it could’ve meant hope A last chance But she never felt it She never said a word She stood as still as death For her there was no world There was no one There was nothing to live for I saw her as the sun set I saw her leap She flew like an angel Only for the briefest of time But she had found a peace She had found her smile I watched her as she fell And I saw her become no more

Robert, I can clearly see every well-written action in this sad poem. At least she had a chance to "fly," something many of us never achieve when we are consumed by grief. There is much power behind your descriptions. Well done! (As for "Playing Santa to Wall Street," I've never been one to hold back. Sometimes I pay the price.) Love, Carolyn
