As We Sleep, Also We Love
This room now dark as our souls are bright.
Lying by you as you sleep this night,
our pulses beat together
the rhythm to a silent prayer.
Two breaths inhale and exhale its words,
so as the breeze and meadow grass profess their need one for the other.
And that prayer is
that these hearts and breaths
shall ever blend,
we touching, mixing our bodies 'neath these sheets.
Do we smile in such slumber
from the pleasure, the peace, the light
we two bestow on a room darkened no more?
We need not answer, for yes,
surely as we sleep, also we love.
