An Idiot I Meant To Forget

The ring of a childhood memory Full of bright sun, and smiling faces A great day in the park when this idiot came along He pulled my hair and said I talk like a boy He pushed me in the swings and let me chase him around We played tag and he let me catch him He tackled me to the ground and got my dress dirty But we didn't care, I beat him anyway We wrestled, and threw stones in the pond We stalked the ducks and threw bread crumbs for them to eat It had been a great day Until this idiot came along Then it became the perfect day We promised to play again tomorrow and he never showed up It hurt my feelings so I thought he was mean I promised myself to forget him even though he'd been a fun playmate Years went by and I went back to the park I was by myself I went down the slide and chased grasshoppers in the tall grass When this idiot came along He pulled my hair and told me I talk like a boy He pushed me in the swings and let me chase him around He tackled me to the ground and I wrestled him and won We fed the ducks and laughed at each others failed attempts at duck calls We talked about how we'd both met a friend in this park and laughed He said he'd pulled the girls hair because he thought it was pretty I told him I'd beaten a boy at wrestling in a dress He told me how he pushed the girl on the swings and thought she had a unique laugh I told him about being excited to play with the boy again the next day who didn't show up We looked at each other surprised He apologized and we made plans to play again tomorrow 7 years later and I'm sitting beside the idiot I met in the park We're holding hands, rings shinning in the sun watching our baby girl Today she met an idiot in the park who promised to come play again tomorrow We both smile at each other and look back at her glowing face Next day, he showed up She met an idiot in the park Who promised to come back to play and did I met my idiot in the park who had met his idiot in the park I married the idiot I'd meant to forget Honestly, I couldn't be happier
