Adrift

I've been adrift; Floating. Complacent waves have sent me further, and further out. Like your breath beneath our mirror; Every bitter exhale pushing me away. We were exhausted. Obedient to the primal nature of these fragile cages, we sought to tear each other free of the very flesh that has kept us together. And yet we couldn't kill. And so I lay here, buoyant and bloody Encircled by thoughts of you, in this pool of plastic sharks. They swim because they fear. They smile and wink, but none of them can make me scream. None of them can drag me below. -James Kelley 2013, All rights reserved.
