A Tear In the Sand
Sitting on a beach
Alone I stare out to sea
I watch the waves grow and die
Endlessly on the rocky shore
A single black bird circles above
Watching me watching it
It speaks to me in words I do not understand
Clouds out on the horizon
Dark and windswept
Edged by gold from the failing sun
Flashes of lightening
Filling my eyes with fire and pain
A newspaper flies by on a tortured wind
Carried miles across the water
Eventually landing across my legs
Black print on white paper
Saying that a child has died
Killed by abuse and neglect
Buried in a shallow grave
Left alone by those who “loved” her
A tear falls down my cheek
Falling into the sand
Washed away by the next wave
Never to be seen again
