A Summer's Night
Approaching the end of the day
cobalt blue skies morph into gray,
as long shadows scurry away.
Soon deepening red rivers run
as blood bleeds from a dying sun,
daylight’s defeated; darkness won.
Miniature vampires alight
as mosquitoes take wing at night;
their quest for blood, fueling flight.
A love sick cricket's chirping song
calls out for a mate all night long,
serenading her, loud and strong.
Playful breezes set leaves to stir
tickling them till they softly purr,
laughing with the wind, as it were.
An evening chill cools the night air
and unblinking eyes seem to stare,
peeking from shadows everywhere.
Nocturnal demons, widely strewn,
morph into phantoms of the moon;
or perhaps, the call of a loon.
