She answered the door with delight in her eyes,
as I gave her the plate with a piece of warm pie
My afternoon's rushed, but she invites me to stay,
and it's hard to say no, as she tries to delay
I have glanced at my watch and the hour is late
I must hurry home, but then, I stop, and hesitate
For I know in my heart that her evenings alone,
are shared only with records and yesterday's songs
And I know what it means, that to be a good friend,
takes the smallest of gestures, or an hour to lend
