A Single Tear
Peppered with pain and misfortune,
life's basted in a glaze of fear.
And desensitized to torture,
death fails to draw a single tear.
Devastating wars and famine
comprise the news brought to our door.
And we're so overwhelmed by pain,
scenes of bloody beheadings bore.
We're numb to horrific events
bombarding us with constant hurt.
And our outlook on world affairs
is steeped in political dirt.
A starving child prompts no response,
nor stirs a compassionate thought.
For death and disease are the norms,
along with the bigotry taught.
As corruption taints global views,
empathy turns to apathy.
And those judged insignificant,
no longer warrant our sympathy.
