A rising river makes a rumbling sound foaming at the mouth like a rabid beast. And it swiftly slithers over its banks like a ravenous snake sensing a feast. Its musty odor saturates the air, forewarning wildlife of its arrival. And frightened animals flee its advance, stampeding as they run for survival. Quenching its appetite, it saturates the landscape like an overflowing bath. And death and debris wallow in its wake as it swallows everything in its path. Like a cold wave seeping into your bones, all you can do is submit to its will. And in minutes, innocent lives are lost, for this water-serpent is keen to kill. Streams are oft bloated by torrential rains, nothing is impervious to a flood. And as water begins to rise, dreams drown, washing away years of sweat, tears, and blood. (Quatrain) 8/31/2015

Very expressive, very true. Sounds like you really experienced this. Many family members lost their homes during Katrina & there is an odor you don't forget, plus the pain of loss of memorable safe places. Thanks for putting it in words, the emotion.

Hey Emile, stopped by for a visit. This is truly a deeply felt piece on the devastating effects of floods. You describe the emotional turmoil that each species endures and the imagery puts us right in the midst of it. Excellent writing and expression. Well done. Be Blessed, Neva
