A Perfect Day To Go

I watched While the tall weeds Waved back and forth And the north wind Bellowed down the mountainside The sky Gray and black Gathered unto itself Readying For the oncoming rains The dampness in the air Hung like a fortuneteller With a sad face About ready to read a future No one wanted to hear As I opened the door To an empty house That I once had called My home Walking into the kitchen I sat down at the table Where an envelope Had been carefully placed Between an old ivory Salt and pepper shaker To this day That envelope still remains Unopened I didn’t need to read The letter you wrote To know why you had gone Or need to see the words Or feel the pain that they held Looking out the window I couldn’t help thinking As the rain started to fall What a perfect day it was To go
