A Pair of Shoes

I tried to walk from my shadow My feet faltered and walked the other way My shadow stopped hesitated shuffled his feet One pair of black shoes stayed behind He waited tried to build up volume but didn't succeed Every time his feet approached the light they appeared inanimate The shoes remained hollow I watched from a distance I was going to lose if I wasn't able to subdue the shadow and this strange fight for my shoes Winter was coming and it would be cold He frantically moved along the wall his long legs slid across the floor The shoes remained stoically without any feeling on the floor unused I dived, struggled with the shadow and won captured him in the shoes now filled with darkness I could never use them again I faced the cold with shoeless feet didn't feel them anymore they might fall off or become relics *** July 9, 2017 Copyright © Darren White
