A Dragons Curse
You can tell by their faces
The way they pinch together at the centre
The furious swatting at invisible flies,
Their gaze fixed upon mine; sucked in at the edges
My mouth, puckered to their disgusted looks
Over shoulders now walking away from
Addiction that’s worn all over my face
Creased against the oily smoke that
Pours forth from nostrils; like a dragon spent
And weak of flesh now
Pondering a myth
About man’s foibles
My receptors feeding on pathways paved
With a drug pushed to the limits of
Social acceptance, yet realisation lurks
At the edges, a cupboard full of promises
Never opened…
I carry on as before, smiling
Through teeth stained with dependence
Watching tendrils of smoke seek out other
Shoulders wearing faces of disgust at a man
Pondering a dragon’s curse
