A Distant Goodbye

Make changes to break the cycle Be mindful, always aware Never create a fearful unsafe home Always protect and care Fear as his dads car pulled into the driveway Watching the removal of his dads belt Knowing what was coming next Not only was it physical pain this little boy felt Watching his mum experience the same Confusion and fear filled his little being No idea the reason why He witnessed the horror he was seeing Confusion and fear turned to anger A teenager now numbing his pain Alcohol and drugs his best mate Trying to erase those memories that remain A father he became …to a baby boy He vowed his family would never be afraid Their home would be their safe place That vow sacred and unbroken to this day A protective, loving, funny, kind man His family his reason why Created a safe happy home full of laughter That cycle of abuse now a distant Goodbye!

it is quite amazing to see an abused child grow into a protector. To take that pain and turn it into his or her reason to be anything other than cruel takes a very strong willed person, and thank God it really does happen. They break that horrid chain. Thanks for the picture of what can be.

What a powerful and moving write this is . The tempo changes and flow pattern bring about an uneasiness to my spirit ...a pain in recognition of this very difficult and sad subject matter. To think of such abuse hurts my heart,,, but certainly needs to be discussed and placed in the spotlight. My mother had just such a father. And ,,, thank god she made the same vow as your son did here. Thank you for the pain of recognition , and the joy of victory in this piece. Deep writing. Darrell

Its not always easy to break the cycle of a abuse but when one does it is nice too, with the help of love within their heart, and also loved ones. sometimes those that have been through so much try and work on being everything they didnt see in their parents. So true! What a moving write this is dear debx. I felt this one. Pleasure always reading your work

This is a psychologically draining subject that I will perpetually be unable to compose adequately. This is not the method I adopted to enforce parenting with my kids. I could never contemplate enduring perpetual bodily agony. But employing embrace seems to work better.

This is a subject that tears my heart and I can never write about it. I never punished my daughter in this way. Wouldn't dream of constant corporal punishment. I prefer cuddles.

Whoa! I know a man who suffered the same kind of childhood. BUT although he tried with all his might not to be like his dad, as soon as his kids misbehaved, his hand went up over his head to smack them hard... Easier to memorize the Constitution than to change one bad habit, as they say... Write on, Deb!

Hi BB…how lovely to see you my friend! Its not an easy task breaking the cycle of abuse for some but it can be done with strength support etc. So many have suffered awful damaging childhoods….So sad! Debx
