A Callous Heart

Half-truths morph into deceit,
warping words of love's refrain.
And caution sounds the retreat,
devastated by the pain.
Your heart lies cold and broken;
passion's flame flickered out.
For hurtful words were spoken
when truths were bandied about.
A naive victim of lust
learns fantasies fall apart.
For fraying the bond of trust,
time reveals a callous heart.
Imprisoned without a key,
feelings become tightly wound.
And unless you set them free,
the love you seek won’t be found.
