Birdbath

I am surprised how such a small oval birdbath I keep in my backyard, attracts so many birds of different species. Of course, I do live in a desert. A lesson in there somewhere. Perhaps make a desert of one's heart, put a small bath of new love offered, and see what winged beauty it may attract.

It is only right to take care of the many birds that flock around your garden.

Enjoyed your brilliant poem about birdbath. It’s really interesting to know you live in a desert, in your words “a semi civilized desert”! I love watching birds in my backyard - having a birdbath will probably attract many more species of birds! It’s almost Spring here - I can hear birds cooing! But you have experiences of a real desert!

I grew up in NYC -- a city boy. So, when I came to Arizona some 40 years ago, wanting to experience open spaces, I immediately took to hiking the mountains and deserts. Horseback riding. All new to me. Got me a six-gun, western holster, just like the movies. It was great fun. Get a Birdbath. Something small, a couple of feet diameter, and you will be surprised just how popular with your winged friends your backyard will become. Blessings my friend.

A good idea. Water is at a premium in the desert. Thank you for helping birds.

Thank you. For sure, Hilda. Unfortunately, the feral cats also know of my little oasis -- a deadly competition.

Do you really live in a desert? OR is this a deep analogy with a message... build a little birdbath in your soul...

I live in Phoenix, a semi civilized desert. But, though rapidly shrinking, there is still some virgin desert not so far from me. When I came to Phoenix there was a lot more. My first job was in a bar in the desert. I did a lot of horseback riding and nature walks. Many nights driving home from the bar a side-winder would slither across the dirt road, faster than one might imagine. I did a lot of hiking in dry river beds, washes throughout the desert -- meditated on the cactus and critters of all kinds. I still have a wild, unkempt white beard, my wife forces me to trim~ I do for the sake of harmony. Love the desert.

The very sight of birds coming around a tub of water to dip in its coolness in this sweltering heat gives a heartwarming feel. Even if our hearts lie arid as a desert, a small pool of love can make it a fecund place where new buds shall germinate. Lovely thoughts, dear Joe.

Birds are so magnificent. I know the science of flight...but it still all seems rather magical to me -- I choose often to believe in miracles over doubt. Thank you, Valsa.

Hi Paula; we get these small parrot/love birds that are so colorful to watch. A little larger and heavier than parakeets, flashing wonderful neon like blues, reds and greens. Spectacular.
