The Remembrance Well

The community of Mobile Terrance in Mobile, Alabama was enjoying a pretty spring day.

It was just under ninety degrees that afternoon. They were about thirty minutes from city

limits. The roads did not get paved until the 1970's. They burned theiir trash. And used

septic tanks. But all this made the people there close.

!:Did you hear about them shutting down the well?: said Benjamin Wallace

:No; said Mary White

:What are you:ll talking about?: said Bessie Johnson

:The well is being shut down next month because of pollution.: said Benjamin

:That's so sad.: said Anne

They were gathered around the welll. These people and their famalies had shared

that well for over forty years. Even after pipes brought water into their own homes.

They were in each other's weddings. They stood by as some of their loved ones

were lowered down into in the dirt. It was a place to conversate.

:We can still come up here from time to time.: What moment would you hold onto?: said Benjamin

:Life is about change. But its good to remember the good times.: said Anne

:Sure is and my best memory is seeing my mother's face after I graduated from

high school. I was the first one in the family.: said Mary

:Mine would be to see my Mae walk down the aisle again on our wedding day.: said Benjamin

:Holding my newborn baby for the longest minute in life. Because I Had to give her up.

I was only 15. Never saw her again.: said Bessie

:Mine would be thanking my grandmother for all she did for me.:said Anne

:Well, I better get this water back to the house before my legs Locke up on me: said Benjamin

:Yeah but let's not forget our families are kin.: said Mary

:And pollution can't stop the memories of things we shared here. again and again. but ol!d age might.:said Bessie laughing.

The group goes to their individual homes . And the sun begins its beautiful sunset on

the terrace.
