July 5 , 1979. Anaheim Stadium. Anaheim California. 23,793 took in a Thursday night game between Oakland Athletics and the California Angels. Nolan Ryan 10-5 vs. 3-9 Rick Langford Now, I'm a Nolan Ryan fan and card collector. To me , Nolan Ryan is a Legendary Icon of the game. I'm researching Nolan Ryan game by game , because I want to know the truth. I want to know how he Won as well as how he lost. However , A good game , is a Good game , IS A GOOD GAME. It's not a secret , Nolan Ryan brought out the best in the opposition. When you know , you're facing Nolan Ryan , You bring your best Game. Rick Langford played in the Major Leagues for 11 seasons , sort of. He had 2 winning seasons. 1980 ( 19-12 ) 1981 (12-10). He had a career record of 73-106. Not very impressive. July 5 , 1979 was probably the best game of Rick Langford entire career. Langford was 27 years of age at the time. He pitched 9 complete innings. Langford faced a total of 32 batters and only Allowed 1 hit. Langford also walked 5 batters and struck out six. Nolan Ryan pitched 9 complete innings. Gave up 3 Runs on 7 Hits Walked 4 batters and struck out 6. Jeff Newman in the first. Rickey Henderson in the third. Tony Armas in the fifth. Carney Lansford in the sixth. Tony Armas in the seventh. Larry Murray in the ninth. Rickey Henderson started the game by reaching first on an error by Dickie Thon the second baseman. Ryan erased Rickey Henderson when he got a little too much of a lead and was picked off at first base. Dave Chalk flied out to LF Mitchell Page doubled to LF. Newman struck out to end the top half of the 1st. Oakland scored their first 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning.. Newman walked to start the inning. Wayne Gross followed with solid double to center field. Newman scored. Mike Heath hit a ball back to the mound. Gross went to 3rd. Jim Essian singled to RF Gross scored. Armas struck out and Rob Picciolo flied out to RF. In the top of the ninth inning Wyane led off with a walk (again). Murray struck out Jim Essian hit a double to CF and Gross scored. Armas grounded out. Picciolo hit a flyball to Right Field to end the inning. The Angels couldn't score in the bottom of the 9th and so it ended by being shut out. If not for Brian Downing hitting a single in the fifth inning , the No Hit King would have had a No Hitter against him. Nolan Ryan went on to become the Greatest Strike Out pitcher of All Time in Major League Baseball. Rick Langford was the greatest for 0ne Day in July 1979
