Necropolis: Chapter I Part VII Betrayal

“Fuck you man, I was going to marry her!”

“What do you know?” Exclaimed Nero, but it comes out as a dry husking bark.

“Sorry, man, you're right it’s not my place to say, I am just your boss, but I am also your friend, and in this business that is a rare thing.”

“Hey, Look, I need to go, sorry to be the messenger of bad news, but I am grateful you’re still among the living. I just stopped by to check in on you. Now that I see you’re ok, I’ll be on my way. Hey, dude, I’ll tell some of the guys from the precinct to stop by.”

“DON’T BOTHER!” huskily shouts Nero. “Go to hell…” Nero’s voice trails off into a whisper.

“OK! I see I have outstayed my welcome!” Nero’s sergeant says as he slaps his legs and pushes up, to leave. “I want your report on my desk as soon as you’re on your feet and feeling better.” House pauses and looks around, nods his head in understanding then says; “I am sorry, for letting the cat out, just like me to stick my mouth where it does not belong.” “Let’s forget this, and let it go, man.” Reaching for the door handle he finally adds as if to put the issue to rest; “I’ll see you when you get back.”

Mustering the effort and saliva to wet his dry mouth, Nero croaks; “Hey, man it's ok, thanks for coming by. Sorry, man… it's all cool… I was just you know…” Nero's voice trails off as the moisture disappears from his mouth. “No worries, man it’s all good” House replies and slips out the door.

Nero slips back down into the sheets and lays his head back and closes his tired eyes, his head hurts. His head pounds with the effort of his visit with House. Darkness will come again he knows and it will take him and the dreams will come laced with memories. He thinks about how he got here, how he got to this damn city. He remembers his wife and his former life. His mind stays clear of the dark hole in his memory of pain so sharp. The feeling is still fresh after five years lost. Five years of building a wall around that pit of raw pain. Five years of trying to forget and longing secretly in his heart of hearts that it never happened and he could have his life back. His mind switches tracks as one's mind offends while waiting for the train to dreamland. He wonders why Jessie left. Damn, he feels rejected again and lost. Asking why this shit happens to him. Jessie knew of his ex-wife and his deep pain. She was one of the few women that he has met that was able to listen to him. He was feeling good with her like they were going to work like he was going to find rest for the monsters that roamed his heart. Now she is gone. What had he done? He needed to talk to her. How did all this start with his roommates, how did this black hole in his life start? But, his heart's secret demon knows and will never let him forget.

Nero slips deeper into sleep, his thoughts getting more random, wondering with a start of terror about his cat Felix. Was he ok, Oh yes that’s right, he remembers Ms. Greenfly from down the hall in Apt. 2432 was the local crazy cat lady and promised to take care of Felix if he is more than a day absent from his appt. Felix was an outdoor/indoor cat and came and went as he pleased through the cracked window. So, that terror subsided and was replaced with a fleeting thought of how and why. Feeling the hum of the servos and deep embedded micro motors burning deep in the high-tech bed, Nero feels his mind slipping into unconsciousness and time.
