A Beautiful Surprise

This morning,I woke up feeling sad and a bit chilly.

As I opened the curtains, I noticed it had rained during the night.

Although it had passed sunrise, there were no signs of the Sun's shining face.

Lazily, I made myself a cup of ginger, lemon and honey tea to try and warm myself.

I took the tea and went into my conservatory to see if the scenery in the garden, with all the beautiful flowers and plants, would cheer me up.

As I sat sipping my tea, I drifted off, wondering why I was sad, but I didn't get beyond that thought as my doorbell rang.

I went to see who it was but only could hear voices. I thought it was probably someone selling something, so I hesitated and stood by the door, waiting.

I wanted to see if they would ring the bell again or leave.

The doorbell didn't ring, but instead, a bang, bang, bang on the door started, so I opened it, and to my surprise, it was my neice and her family.

They all shouted, Surprise! Surprise! Aunty.

I invited them in, and a friendly young man took hold of my hand as we made our way into the conservatory.

I hadn’t seen my niece since she moved to live in New York some five years ago, and now here I was meeting her three-year-old son. The visit was short but very enjoyable.

Later I realised that my mind was so busy that those feelings of sadness had drifted far, far away.

Life's realities are such that one moment you're down and the next you're up.
