Elephant In the Room

- by - Bob Atkinson

of the African and Asian kind

we see them in the room

how they got here is a puzzle

as we fly from idea to word

they do not make us sit upright

what they do is make us lay

upon the beds that we have made

with our unsubstantiated ways

their purpose is to prod our minds

make us do things more rightly

our thoughts and actions become clearer

as they supervise our path harshly

elephants can be ponderous

or they can tweek our brains

and give us more reasons to present

our own erudite refrains

then they go on their way

leaving our minds a little sharper

in presenting our thoughts to others

and seeing things a little cleaner

isn't that they are so obvious

you'd never know they're here

unless you're given a "U"

oh no...

for thoughts you made unclear

now that the lights are nearly out

and the door is open wide

the path toward perfection
has been lighted by our guide
