Thoughtful & meaning answers below, Brian, art is subjective, for sure, often immeasurable, but frequently measurable by consensus! if one can quiet the noise of life, the mind's eye can restore, nurture & heal us with moments of magical art daily

Perhaps the maxim ' a picture paints a thousand words ' best sums up the question ,although not the practicalities of either.

Yes, it is. A poet is as much an artist as a painter is, the only difference is a poet creates mental imagery and a painter/sculptor/sketch artist creates visual imagery on a canvas.

An interesting product of this quandary is the many delightful 'shape'(concrete) poems where talent for both topics are combined into one.Some here are truly imaginative and left field in originality.

Sad to say ,so much poetry especially ' verse freed' is structured prose with very little poetic 'art ' of any kind or even structure sometimes,for that matter.

Poetry is under literature and part of performing arts. It is an art for it shows human creativeness.... expressing one's imagination of beauty, feelings, emotion and observations.

If poetry is not an Art, neither is any of the other things that they call Art, imho. Read the great legendary poets of old and then with any level of intellect/emotion or sensory apparatus in the human body that can create, feel, see, hear, imagine, hold and embrace beauty- dare to say poetry is not art! Such would definitely be blind folly, imho...

I enjoy some poems more than others. Those special poems have really good rhythm and flow. I know that is a gift the poet has to create fluid rhythm. I find it very difficult to create that flow but enjoy trying. It is an art that is developed over time for me(or maybe never) or maybe some are born with it. Sara

As art is in the eye of the beholder, poetry is often only appreciate by other poets, and lost on the masses.
