Where did that come from?

Blog Posted:11/6/2016 11:42:00 AM

I read an interview with Paul Simon. today in which he said of his 'Sound of Silence' Where did it come from? I really don't know.

Are you the same about your poetry ? In retrospect I sometimes get a comment about a back poem and wonder the same thing. Clearly the inspiration existed, but only the poem remains.

The creative process is indeed a many splendored thing!

I write from my heart. I write what's on my mind. I do have some old poetry that I wrote in jr. high and high school and I do sometimes think, "Wow, what was I thinking then?".

For me it sometimes is like Frank Herrera says LOL. But most times it's a phrase, a word, a sentence, and I have to write that down fast before I forget it. My best poems are written in a trance-like state, with sentences that are already singing in my mind before I can sit down and work on it. And then it flows like a river.... If I have to think about what to write, I overthink and nothing comes of it...

The reason I put 'welding' is that if you meant marriage, you would need to ask about 'weddings and technology', not wedding and technology.

Do you mean welding?

I love the comments from everyone on this topic Brian, I agree with all. Buggered if I know where the words, or the phrase ... or half the time the ideas, where they all come from is mysterious to me.

So many of my poems started with just one line or idea, and by the end, turned into something completely different than my first intention. Yes...I often wonder where did that come from. I often think poetry is somewhat like a dream. Our subconscious takes control, and creates the end result. Great blog topic, Brian!

I can totally relate to Paul Simon's comment about not knowing where the words come from. I never know what my muse is going to come out with next Brian I am just amazed I have embraced writing so much:-) hugs Jan xx

I often start a poem with a desired objective and message but during the write something "else" just takes over to change direction and quite often send me to a truer course. After reflecting on it, I find the error was in my trying to force the outcome -instead of letting the heart speak. One must always just let the heart speak IMHO.

I can write a poem with a particular intent but after its composition see that it is also an analogy... Once that is perceived, the original inspiration is no longer so important.

this is a great blog question, Brian. Everyone was always saying Paul Simon and Garfunkel were writing songs about man's alienation from man or society in the 60's. I assumed the song was about that. Thought the duo had in fact had agreed. But it's possible it simply came from nowhere. I just wrote a poem this very week that is kind of like that for me. It turned out to be quite a depressing poem but I really enjoyed doing it and I had no idea I was going in that direction when I started it. Most of the time, I have purpose but it's fun to let the words just take you wherever they may go sometimes!
