WHAT'S IN A WORD?

Blog Posted:9/1/2016 2:35:00 AM

'Poetry' is derived from the Greek word '" to make"....but is poetry really 'made' or does it just happen ? Does it suddenly 'appear' spontaneously  so to speak in our mind's eye , like an idea  or is it we something we sit down and fabricate consciously into a particular syllabic form on a particular topic?

Does it matter either way? can the difference be determined by anyone other than its author?

Putting to paper 1/2 thoughts, be they dreamt, implied, wished or otherwise concealed, very much plays a part in my creativity process, always attempting to present a piece naturally rhythmic as people talk, with real breathing, thinking pauses

Such good advice Jim, I like the 'thinking pauses' phrase especially.

Some of my poetry just happens - I can wake with an entire poem in my head like this recent poem. Seven swarthy swimmers Sailboard so silently Surfing stormy seas. With contests it depends if the sponsor requires a specific form then my creativity is a little more restricted. Irrespective of how a poem is formed I am just so happy to have discovered writing and hope other people enjoy my musings !:-) hugs Jan xx

I also love reciting my poems Brian and have recently been going to open mike sessions on the Island. I will be appearing on stage in November - its a charity event at our Gaiety Theatre - if its sold out it will be in front of about 800 people ... no pressure then!:-) hugs Jan xx

Keep writing alliteration like this Jan and they surely wil.

The idea sure appears spontaneously, but then one has to 'make' it into a poem consciously:) The difference must not be determined by others, that alone makes it good 'poetry':)

Yes Lin creativity is not as simple as it sounds.Follow the muse leading wherever it wanders.

I agree with you, too, Jo. Sometimes I read a phrase or hear lyrics and that's the spontaneous part~my first thought for writing. Then consciously I turn it into a poem, and not one that always follow the direction I had intended but that's the beauty of creativity. It's great when others appreciate it, but if not, that doesn't make it less important to the hand that wrote it.

Yes, I agree Jo.

The art of poetry is through composition, and I'm sure non-poets appreciate that.

For me Julia poetry is at its best as a spoken art form, which I have found is the way that most 'non-poets' most appreciate our genre.

Oftimes with me an idea 'happens' and I jot it down and then..it seems to gestate for some while and then I stumble across it again and a poem forms.(The same thing seems to happen with my blog topics!)

Ah, Juia what is 'good' is happily subjective and happily open to many viewpoints.

To reply to yours of 3:30, the rhymes have to be good. Inspiration is your business, but we only see the rhymes.

Ideas are not poems. We all start off with those.

and also with the collection of illustrated clerihew that is my current project...often the rhymes are a little forced ie 'made' although the subjects are usually 'inspired'
