Just one more note on anyone who wants to try for the poetry competition. Keep in mind that this one is for 8th graders--and the ones who are actually using the text--sort of test driving it as it is completed--just happen to be boys! So if you can write sonnets about things 13 yr old boys might relate to--animals, hunting, cars, camping, boy scouts, biking, or you name it. So many sonnets are either about love or death. They're great, of course, but try finding stuff that 13 year old boys like in terms of poetry.

Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments. And I don't mind answering serious questions. I'm just not going to be a tool for someone else's ego trip. OF COURSE, I will ask permission of those in the contest or anyplace else that I find poetry or stories or whatever that might be included. It's actually an ongoing project with a story behind it that I won't put here. Home schoolers are a different world and have opportunities to access literature, history, and whatever else that is not longer taught in our "revisionist" emphasis public schools. The actual text is electronic with the supporting materials available in print. It's about 3/4 finished.

yes to Giorgio's question below. I see this happen all the time. Well, at least in the anthologies I have been part of, there was no monetary compensation. On a few occasions I was given a free copy of the publication but usually all who took part also bought their own copies (at discounted price). I never had anything but trust in your contest and your wonderful idea to use our work in your book, Karen, if we should be deemed fortunate to be included. To be a small part of something like this meant for the education of children would be priceless.

As Craig has stated, many journals and smaller publications only offer publication, no pay. Another way of looking at this, is that someone saw something wonderful in the poems at Soup, worthy enough to want to compile them into a teaching manual for children. I once hosted a contest called, "the Great Poetry Release." The premise was this: Write a poem and leave it somewhere public, with their name of course. Some, tuck them into church bibles. One, tucked it into a jewelry box and left the box on a park bench. Poetry is ours. It is ours to either keep or to give away. It is the poet's choice. I like Karen's contest idea and wish her and all poets who support her book best wishes.

Thank you for also including the fact that she will be asking for permission first Craig; this is useful information to those interested. Had you not let us know it may have taken us a while to realize Karen is offering this opportunity :) For someone just starting out, testing the waters with a poem or two sometimes helps.

Hello, Karen! Nice to meet you and welcome to the Soup. Please, forget (actually, ignore!) the incident regarding your contest. Almost the majority of the Soupers (99,99%) doesn't have delusions of inflated worth, power, or knowledge ... nor they believe themselves to be CIA agents or the reincarnation of Sir William ... : D! So, nothing happened. : D
