I am with Andrea. I have to write about what I know. I would probably be a better poet had I suffered the indignities that others have struggled with but that has not happened. I did write a piece called "The Bitter Price" after the bombing at the races but it is about tackling ugly problems at the beginning f a person's life with love and good parenting. Just tried to find it and it hid from me.I have been having lots of technical problems with Soup recently. Joyce

I like what Debs said down here. to put our energy into what we do best. I feel that rhyming poetry, which I do the most naturally, is not usually conducive to writing of world problems (except maybe in a humorous way). If I were to write very seriously about the world's poverty and other horrible things out there, I would most likely use prose, and this is mostly a site for poetry, not prose. Also, that kind of writing is difficult for me. A real struggle though I have crafted more than a few poems on themes such as Rwanda and other examples of man's inhumanity to man.

With me, the key is to find balance(this has already been mentioned). This comment will be filled with flawed logic; the points can unravel within hypocrisy. I decided not to buy another PM(for blogging) the day after Nelson Mandela passed away. When Madiba passed on, there weren't blogs here about it; no tributes; discourses. Instead, the soup blogosphere was filled with fighting and jealousy. The irony of it was yet another revelation for me. Here was Madiba with his clandestine past, a living, breathing gospel who helped millions of humans to reconciliate the divides of hatred, with mercy, understanding and forgiveness, and the blogs were filled with petty fighting that day. So, I find balance. The arts community which I am part of, is where I advocate on platforms of expression, and the soup is where I now barely advocate, and instead post about my favourite wind-up toy, or wotever.

con't... There are lots of small mags out there that are in desperate need of people like us, those that care, and they should be given a louder voice, that is when people start to stop and listen, (if only for two minutes ) because it would be coming from someone who is unknown and that is what catches the attention of the electorate, if any politician went on TV and started his/her speech with the words 'I have a dream' we would all turn off because it would be nothing new, it takes the voices of many to make a mouse roar like a lion, that would stop us in our tracks and boy would we listen. Seek them out, I have long been sending material to some and helped others here do the same...

Cyndi, chum...well I am sorry to say that none of what you said made me feel uncomfortable in any way, why? because it is all part of our everyday life and in some sad way we are becoming immune to it, our senses become numb, we see it in on TV, papers, twitter, youtube, etc. etc. etc. we are surrounded by it on phones, PC's laptops, tablets, smart watches etc, etc, and I am not saying any of it is correct, I too have written about all of these subjects and read them at big venues and small circles only to get the same response; boredom. I will be posting another one on this subject tonight when I finish it and it is a subject close to my heart but will it make any difference; I doubt it.

Poetry is in escape to a beautiful dreamy world for me Cyndi..But at times I do write about the pulse of the poor, the prisoner, about Concentration camps in Warsaw..about peace, and against war, against corruption and power of politicians Maybe I need to have a stronger voice.Yes , I watch the international news too,and I saw the happenings in Ukraine ,and even the happenings in other countries ,I see the dirt of politicians and power and where it can lead too.Tnks for sharing this blog sweet Cyndi.

Each of us has to walk our own path in our own time and no one can force us onto it a minute earlier than we are ready to, those who still watch and listen to what is put forth as news SEE the horrors in the world SO much and so often they have become immune to the sight of it. So when you feel as you do you are either preaching to the choir or the deaf dumb & blind. I gave up 'preaching' at about fifty, concentrate your own efforts where you think the energy you have [which isn't boundless] is best used. That's my best advise to stay sane.

Cyndi, this is a very powerful blog. As usual you writing talent has come into play in a very persuasive way here. I have written a piece of Female Genital Mutilation. I have written about war. I have written a piece for Restore a Child about the needs of orphaned children. I have written about the effects of MS on a person's life (my mama's). There is only so much of other's pain one can absorb. It is a delicate balance. If we were to empathize with EVERYONE, we wouldn't be able to survive. So, we pick and choose our causes. Mine is to get recognition for the Armenian Genocide. Before exterminating the Jews, Hilter said, "After all, who remembers the Armenians." I have two poems on that.
