Ban assault weapons. That should be the cry of everyone. Instead I read that guns are flying off the shelves right now. Gun lovers fear that sales will be banned. There are enough assault weapons out there right now to kill us all. Sales should be halted and everyone should voluntarily turn them in to be destroyed. There is no possible use for an assault rifle except for killing another human being. It's time we all opened our eyes. Joyce

The media is having a field day with these killings and will create more killings. I don't believe in gun-control but banning automatic weapons and weapons of mass destruction (the kind Bush never found in Iraq) is just common sense. I never owned a weapon but I have the right to bear arms. My uncles were hunters. They never shot a human. We've created the mental health problems by making excuses for any criminal acts and taking away the responsibility of the perpetrator. Our government thrives on crisis. Gun and weaponry manufacturers control a chunk of Wall Street. The problem is complicated but anyone who "needs" a semi-automatic or automatic weapon "needs" some psychiatric treatment.

I so agree with you, Chris, and also the things Cyndi said about mental health issue. Many layers to the problem. I am glad you brought up the fact that the killer himself was a product of our sick society and the issue is indeed a very complex one. How I wish that my country were more like yours in some aspects such as gun control. I remember that crazy Archie Bunker show: All in the Family. The guy was hilarious because the stuff he was saying all the time was so damn ignorant!

SANDY HOOK, Conn.—The 20-year-old man who burst into an elementary school here and fatally shot 20 children and six adults destroyed a computer in his home, which could thwart the investigation into his motive, a law-enforcement official said on Monday. Investigators consider the computer a telling clue into the state of mind of Adam Lanza when he embarked on a massacre Friday that included shooting his mother to death inside their home in Newtown, which includes the village of Sandy Hook. {From an online report, dated 18 December}. - Followup to my comment >>

A decent mix of comments here. I grew up in Canada's Wild, Wild West(lol). It was a farming community with a merging of 4 cultures: Aboriginal First Nations, German-Dutch, Scottish and British. We were all exposed to firearms for several reasons, including the need to protect the farming livelyhood of crops and cattle from roving bears and mountain lions(it was that or possibly go bust), and a vibrant hunting community. Many of us became adept marksmen. During all of those years there, even though tempers occasionally flared, and some broken noses and black eyes were exchanged, to this day, there hasn't been a firearms related homicide in that region, let alone a massacre. I am not that old yet....this wasn't too long ago. Since I am a British Columbian at heart, we don't like our own government, and we especially don't like the American government. The 2nd Amendment was set in place during a time of single-shot muskets. The Amendment was drafted to ensure citizens could be part of the political process by being able to topple a tyrannical government, and to defend America's borders against foreign invaders. I don't see Americans toppling their government of tyranny, especially since how does one topple a gov defended by such firepower? As for foreign invaders 200 years ago....who was that going to be exactly? Upper Canada? Canadians had their hands full as it was, staving-off American invasions. When it comes to the 2nd Amendment, one of the main objectives of the American government, is to protect citizens from the ripple-effects of such an Amendment. I don't see this happening at all. The 2nd Amendment is an antiquated Amendment of a bygone era. Nowadays, a theoretical foreign enemy would use nuclear warheads or other nasty weapons, anyway. Wot are bullets going to do against that? A nation which projects itself as an elite, advanced nation, but has a citizenry armed with 316,000,000 registered firearms, and a minimum of 30,000,000 illegally unregistered firearms, is not an advanced culture at all, but a degenerate culture with advanced tools. There's a difference. It is a crying shame that innocent children are the collateral damage in all of this.

Chris , everything you've said in this blog I agree with, I grew up in a house full of guns, I came from a family of avid hunters. There is no way my brother or myself ever had access to them unless we were hunting with my father. Nowadays I buy meat, I have no need to own a rifle. I have a BB gun for target shooting. I was taught early to respect guns and what they do. NO ONE needs an assault rifle . NO ONE.

Hey, I agree with everything you say here. Like you, I see layers... In the media frenzy of Newtown, a story in China barely made two minutes of airplay http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2248054/China-stabbing-22-children-elderly-woman-stabbed-outside-primary-school-Chinese-knifeman.html I think there MUST be reforms made to gun laws, MUST! But other changes do need to be made as well, areas which you covered so well in this blog. There should be free or at least affordable mental health care available to all citizens, a better system in place to recognize and help those with severe personality disorders. Are we in the middle ages? I'm scared... children ARE targets. I feel helpless

Murders with fire arms in recent times through developed countries.. United States: 9,369 Germany: 269 Canada: 144 Australia: 59 United Kingdom: 14...... The statistics speak for themselves really.. Come on USA when will you learn.. Just because you have to right to bear arms doesn't mean you should. I totally agree with your blog Chris something drastic needs to be done, shame no one has the balls to do it.. Lets stop all the needless deaths such as these 20 little angels and their teachers and the Trayvon Martin's of the world... xxx

"guns don't kill people, it is people who kill people" more precisely, it is the psychopaths behind the programmed patsy who kill people...I stopped watching the news when the penny dropped that it feeds us a false reality; there is so much more to this story than meets the eye, certainly much more to it than the illuminati-owned mainstream media's fairy story version...

Agree 100%. A question which had sprung to my mind was whether the mother had armed herself to protect herself from a possible attack by her son. Too ashamed or not being believed if she had reported his violent episodes? Video games did play a part in the shooter's state of mind (of that I am sure) - dehumanizing him to the point that killing in a game did not give him the rush he craved. He was reportedly part of a group who played games.... I would like to see ALL violent video games banned! Yes, it is big bucks to the industry, but we got in on the tail end here in SA and we are feeling the effect that these games have on the collective mentality of our youth. This is very worrying.

Chris 1. I am not saying we (UK) have it right and USA have it wrong. 2. our local police force are not armed 3. when we do see police armed it is a very chilling sight 4. our statistics for people being shot is 00.1 in every thousand. 5. I think that speaks for itself, if laws are not changed then nothing will change, it is not just going to take a very brave leader to start the ball rolling but it needs the help of every breathing person, Obama cannot do it on his own.6. I do not know a single person who can comprehend having a gun in the house, yes we are being attacked, women raped, people murdered, mugged as they are in every country, but if they changed the law ( con't)
