  Years ago,after my mother died,I sat down to look through some of her things.

I ran across a poem my father had written to her when they were young.

She had scribbled a derogatory remark on the back of it.

   I was very surprised at both of those things.

First ,that MY father would ever write a poem,

and secomdly that my mother would treat it so callously.

   Like Mark's dad,my father was not given to openly expressing his emotions.

On the other hand,I thought my mother to be a real lover of the arts.

There in my hand was a profound challenge to my estimation of both parents.

Or maybe not...............

After all she kept that little piece of paper in her cedar chest for over twenty years

and now I know my father better because of that little poem from his heart..
