War

WAR

The enemy was near and he shook with fright
His fear visible even in the darkness of night
He thought of his home on a rainy day
A beating sun and tractors on a farm bailing hay

Peace time was fun, you played the game
Now it is real, a body bag with your name
He tried to stay focused with bullets flying
I'm okay he thought, my friends bleeding and dying

The brass gave out orders from our Commander-in-Chief
I pledged my loyalty but now only grief
High and dry they sat giving orders to kill
I'll probably die when I charge that damned hill

It's all bull, this honor and glory
At best I survive and tell some damned story
How romantic the war and the women that follow
People listen, brows raised with a stare so shallow

They are proud of your service and ribbons on your chest
None of them gave a crap, only listening at best
The only reward, a pat on the shoulder
His son didn not serve, now in college much bolder

People like you are something we need
So our life can go on with other good deeds
And when your comrades get hit they will get their fame
A flag on their coffin and a stone with their name
