Kansas
Kansas I stand before you open hearted, ready to receive you after a spring rain. I have always held such deep nostalgia for your beauty and calm, after such cleansings.
As I exhale I open my nose, and smell your rich metallic earth embracing the nourishment from the heavens.
I open my ears and am comforted by the receding calls of a rumbling thunderstorm, I am moved by the lonely call of a distant owl, the exuberant orchestra of finches, the determined squawk of a redtail hawk on it hunt, and the gentle croaking of a frog, calling for it's lover.
I open my eyes and am greeted by a rabbit feeding on dew covered grasses, a golden finch bathing in placid waters, and a cardinal plowing its beak through grass and dirt for worms.
And I open my heart and see the world as an interconnected oneness, each system nourishing another.
I inhale and envision the lifeforce of all the plants around me drawing in the nourishment from the passing rain, and the warmth of the sun, and I fall in love with the world and all that it holds. And in this moment you cleanse my soul, and I am grateful.
