Our Little Friend

Our little friend

Who knows what is its sex, it is difficult to say
But regardless, being reckless, we named him Donald
That implies, in any case, that it is him.

He is intense, always on guard
He has a pointed face, with sharp beady eyes
His four spider-like legs
Make him look like a crocodile
Except for his lithe body of a small size.

He is obviously very smart
He does not miss any a tiny, weeny fly
He hides with us, among the lanai’s pots and plants
At night and even during the day
He even nibbles the crumbs of food that fall away.

His favorite resting position
Is, being perched on the upper, outer side of a lanai’s clay pot
Presumably, because he can see the world and it’s nice and warm
When we come in, he greets us in response
By swiftly vanishing among the pots.

We love him and, talk about and to him
We have a deep emotional involvement
When we do not see him, we worry about his whereabouts
We also are concerned about his health and weight
Eating food he evolutionary never had.

We are also concerned about the appropriateness of his name
Being so smart, timid, gentle and sane
His character does not bear resemblance to our future president
After whom he got his name
Perhaps in future we may change the name
Of our dear lovable gecko pet.
