If We Were Closer

If we were closer,
we wouldn’t be in this mess.
Wouldn’t have a worry in our little world,
just the two of us side by side.
Heart by heart.
Soul by soul.

If our bodies were closer,
our hands could fold together;
our lips could touch with the passion
that filled our hollow reality with love and devotion.
Your gentle eyes could gaze into mine,
diligently reminding me,
I am worth something.
Anything.
Even for a moment.

If our hearts were closer,
the love that brought us together could blossom with every beat,
every pulse of the two soulful organs
would pull us deeper into the trance
we have been in since the day we had met.
Drawing us in and pushing us together
like magnets.
Instant connections.

If we were closer,
I wouldn't have to worry about Her.
I wouldn't have to worry about you fading away,
finding someone better.
Leaving me behind.
I could love you freely,
knowing you'd love me back.
If only,
We were closer.
