Vandalia Road

a beaten path which leads to a place time forgot

this old dusty road lined with trees on either side
taking me back to the only place i've ever truly felt at home
surrounded by social misfits
mother goose, the orphans, the girls and their pimp
dilapidated houses bought out by the government
encircling a culdesac

somewhere out in the field of tall grass
lies a set of obsolete railroad tracks
beyond that a treeline
which comes to life with sound
cicadas, crickets, bullfrogs, katydids
the roar of the muddy flat bringing the bass
fireflies providing the accompanying lightshow

mother goose preps dinner for the invisible people
the orphans laughing as they chase the lightshow
the girls filing out single file behind their pimp
and i sit swaying on a porch swing
a sweaty ice cold glass of vodka in one hand
a smoldering cigarette in the other

here, there are no bills, no rules
no one to tell you "no"
here, a place that time forgot
i welcome you to come stay with me
on vandalia road
