Why Do the Bells Still Toll?

Why do the bells still toll
For such senseless deaths as these?
Us brothers fighting wars
Over vain discrepancies.

Why do the people cheer
Only when their sons come home?
No cheers when peace is met,
Solely when we conquer Rome.

Why do our bullets pierce
Every heart that yearns to beat?
Since when was life reduced
To a lesser shell of meat?

Why do we never learn,
Despite pleas from shattered souls,
To lay our weapons down
Lest these bells persist their tolls…

forever questions we are still unable to answer. A nice reminder of our insanity.

Great poem and message. Most wars are fought foolishly and needlessly. I enjoyed the structure and rhyme, too.
