The Lie

There was very little she could say
Which was not already understood,
After all the snow was falling -
White sheets over the earth -
Like it was trying to hide something,
The lies she had told herself,
The truth she had revealed
Long after the cold sun had settled
Into the dead, frozen branches.
She lied next to him in the moonlight
And told herself that if she could,
If she could just steady herself in his breaths,
If she could just hold his hand in the darkness,
If she could just feel his heart in her bare chest,
If she could do those things,
She wouldn't have to lie.
