The Gift

The Gift
I should have closed her eyes
those first fingers touching
taking her to Heaven – mine

I should have been allowed to scream
to alert & alarm this earth that she had left
Heaven and angels ready to welcome her in

And as I watch the nurses finger her gentle lids
closing the box of her
this last time - my beautiful gift
no longer to open
she slips into a deeper sleep
where boxes and lids and I don’t go
knowing colors I am yet to see

I breathe this still breathing life
lost – within - this box of me – empty
it’s wet outside - and in
I already miss her sunshine - know her rain has dried
wiping mine – wet & lonely
I breathe this life
as my rainbow appears
vibrant & high

They were ready
