The Key to a Prince's Heart

She beheld a key in her hands
flashing gold; it’s mesmeric glint
with double sets of wings
and cogs of time

It glinted in her hand

I stared at it; slack jawed
and bedazzled by its beauty
I imagined, oh how I imagined

I asked her: “Where does it lead to?”

And she smiled; a conspirator’s smile
maybe a treasure chest
or the key to a prince’s heart
she giggled, and I smiled.

We sat on the porch, late afternoon
drinking lemonade in china cups,

and just looked upon it.

It’s golden hue glinting
larger than life beauty

The late summer sun
enriching the hues

"Maybe it’s the key
to a door from long ago," I said

NO! It’s the key to a prince’s heart;
she stated adamantly.

I now hold the key to my door,
and think back to that afternoon

So long ago, and wonder if she
ever found her prince…
