A Dissection of Christmas

Bereft of vim, in copses branches bow
by winter's whims cursed to exsanguinate.
As far as naked gazes would allow
we marveled at Earth's crimson-spattered pate.

Cold skin met woolen mitten as we sought
the wealth of Christmas spirit to convey.
A horde of hands and hearts in darkness fought
'til desolation's troops beleaguered lay.

A tincture, scarlet faces did proceed
Accompanied by streams of jolly tunes
To soothe encumbered souls and vanquish need,
A surrogate for Nature's frozen boons.

Beneficence twixt folk in times unkind:
I've found this "Christmas" thusly best defined.

[for contest: ring size= 7, favorite color= red]

Excellent theme, vocabulary and meter went into the creation of your top winning sonnet. Big congratulations, Nemo

Unique approach! A picture of environment painted ruthlessly accurate yet maintaining contact with social norms. A lesson in intersectionalism I think!

Many congratulations, Nemo. An altogether different look at this theme. It took me back to the Christmas truce ceasefires between the Germans and the Brits during the first World War. Best wishes Wendy

Nemo, beneath your poem you put size seven ring and favorite color red. I'm assuming this is a ladies' size seven as men's sizes usually begin at 8. I will see if I have a size seven red ring to send to you and if I do, I will include another matching piece of jewelry. Your poem is wonderful and made the top ten on both my and Jack's list. That was the case for all those in the top five. So send your address in Soup Mail. Hope to mail prizes in the coming week! Hugs, Carolyn
