My aching eyes masked
by a single piece of prickly fabric
Encircled by a strange
yet familiar smell
My stiff arms were immovable,
as were my numb legs as I
sat upright in a supposed chair
wrapped up in more itchy material
Hearing faint footsteps of squeaky shoes echoing
A room I was entrapped in
Paper was been shuffled and crunched
Detecting urgency in this person’s hastened actions
as the footsteps approached
getting louder with each step
I felt my bare toes move on
the soft pavement below me,
where my feet were also bound
I felt my heart beat accelerate
There was no escape

Leaving feelings of rejection and abandonment
Along with the sorrow and pain
With effects that linger
For many years
Yet in the midst of our sorrow we continue
To love them in their absence
They are not dead who
Live in lives they leave behind
In those whom they have blessed,
They live a life again
And shall live through
The year’s eternal life
They shall grow each day
more beautiful
As time declares their good,
forgets the rest,
and proves their immortality
we stand alone but
to remain strong
our only solution
Is prayer

You can’t own it
but you can use it
You can spend it
but you can’t keep it
Once you’ve lost it,
You can never get it back
Like a lightning bolt,
Your heart will blow
We only have a short period to live
Mistakes are bound to happen, yet
Everything is a lesson in disguise
There’s always still a chance for us
A spark in us
To reach out for the light
And let it shine
Savouring life’s little pleasures
Let your dreams be bigger
than your fears
And live life with no regrets

Don’t be pushed by your problems
Be led by your dreams
Live the life
you want to live
Be the person you want to remember
years from now
Make decisions
and act on them
Know in your heart
that you gave your dreams
your best shot
Each of us has a fire
in our hearts
burning for something
Find it
and keep it lit
This is your life
And it’s a short one
Disappointments may occur
But these are challenges
Tests of persistence
And courage
Follow your own intuition
And dream with your eyes open
Until you know
Exactly what it looks like
Turn your dreams into reality
And live life
with no regrets

Thuwaibah Bayat Poem
After many months
Of living in secrecy, I now
want to show myself
to the world
I want to be known, yet
there’s something that
holds me back
I look at myself in the mirror
feeling content with the way I look
But I find myself still
staring at the mirror
And once again
I see the small teenage girl
trapped in darkness
I lose complete interest
I lose hope
I sit back and close my eyes
for a while
I reflect back into the past
remembering those tragic moments,
Those tragic days;
Those tragic months
My hands trembling and
My heart beating faster
I needed to face my fears
And here i am
Wandering through the streets
Of amsterdam
Still unsure about what i want
To do with my life
Looking from side to side but
Fear still resides inside me
