A Lovely Little Daydream

Reality has escaped me as I sit in this dark room
The space that you used to occupy so fully.
Cold, sterile walls stare back at me
Ticking clocks go unnoticed as my mind is swept
Away, like your short-lived life.

Eyes closed
I hear the sweet lilt of your voice
See your angelic curls,
Curiosity in your light blue eyes,
Scuffed knees, busy hands.

Lights flicker
and there you are
All dressed up in your tux and ready for prom
Cane in hand and ready to dance.

Pipe organ chimes
There you are with your family
1 boy, 1 girl
One on the way.
Smiling, laughing
Full of life.

A lovely little daydream
of things
Not
Meant
To
Be.

The Tree of Living

A seedling is planted. The strong wind blows.
It bends in the breeze but does not break.
Rain lashes from the sky but still it holds firm to the ground that cradles it.
Life sparks. Roots grab the hand of Mother Earth.

Leaves begin to form and unfurl to wave at the beautiful blue sky on the balmy spring day.
Time marches onward and the sapling sprouts up like a teenage boy
with his arms stretched out to gather the gentle morning dew.
Strength begins to flow and branches become corded with muscles.
The tree does not falter on its chase for maturity.
Storms continue to rage but the tree holds fast.
Gaining strength through the adversities.

At last adulthood comes but the tree continues to grow.
There are many rings of experience to add to its core.

The elements continue to ravage the noble tree and finally it succumbs to age and weather.
Falling gently.
Immersing itself back into the summoning sepulcher of slumber.

Lost Words

I hear the pain of friends,
I hear lyrics on the radio,
I see images in movies,
I remember.

Friends who have lost
Loved ones without a chance,
A chance to say goodbye,
To mend fences,
To heal wounds,
To make peace,
To say “I love you”
One last time.

Melodies of remorse
Play discordant tunes
Images flash by on screens
Gone dark
Lights, camera, no actions

But not for me,
No lost words,
Pain, yes,
But no regrets.
I had the chance
To say goodbye
To mend fences
To make peace
To say “I LOVE YOU”
And to hear those
Sweet, precious words.
A final parting gift
As angels beckoned him home.

Take care to heal the wounds,
Mend fences,
Make peace,
Don’t live with the regret of
Lost words.

Rebel

Rebel

His hair was orange
His classmates didn’t understand.
They talked about him behind his back
Why would a boy dye his hair?
The next insult--
He pierced his ears
Why was the big, smart jock doing these things?

They couldn’t see the bigger world
They hadn’t been exposed to much
Kept in their small-town, small-minded state

He did not follow; he wasn't a sheep
He even possessed the magic to pull his straight-laced sister
The goody-goody to small, rebellious acts
A piercing AND a TATTOO

You see he was a REBEL--
He was fire in a darkened room
And the world--
The world was better for having him
IN it

Even for the brief time
That he graced these shores
BUT--
His light shines on in all those--
Those whose fortune it was
To know him

My Fortune

Life has been a ride
In times like a roller coaster
Rushing up at us
A climb…
Then a plummet into depths unknown

But there has been one constant
One unchangeable thing
The constancy of our love for
Each other and our family
Constant...strong

Darkest despair has been a companion
Over many a day
Rainbows have come with promises kept
Joy has been shared in new life
Sorrow in passing

What I do know
Is that I would not trade
My life with you
For wealth, or fame,
Or fortune.

My fortune is you.

Inked Soul

For you, I will stain my body
For you, I will let the needle
pierce my skin,
ink my flesh,
as your absence inks my soul.

I carry darkness there and
this new tattoo
will just be that bone-deep stain
making its outward appearance.

Sometimes you can see it in my
eyes
but I try so hard to hide
the grief
and anger.

So for today, a KNOT
to show remembrance
of how your HEART
is entwined with mine.
