Marilyn Hernandez Poem
Sniff, sniff; smell that?
The bridges are burning,
There goes the kinship,
You’ll never be earning,
‘Cause blood is thicker,
Or so you claim,
You carved in the truth,
The name of your game,
You tattooed your duplicity,
And pretended not to know,
Insulting our intelligence,
With the seeds you sow.
To use us in your time of need,
When all your blood ran out,
But you’ve wasted all your water,
And now you’ll live with drought.
Conveniently, when your fire’s doused,
You’ve got your blood transfusion,
Your loyalties have been restored,
Our familial bonds? An illusion.
But we were already prepared,
‘Cause water is much quicker,
It was only a matter of time,
And we were watching the ticker.

Marilyn Hernandez Poem
Words run a race
Inside my head
My heart quickens pace
Inside my chest
This roller-coaster brings no thrill
To my emotional state
My thoughts run fast but I stand still
In these hectic days

Marilyn Hernandez Poem
You tread on others without care
Hiding behind your tyrannical God
No longer will I appease your lies
With a humored smile and nod
‘Cause it’s all about you
And the garbage you spew
With no regard for the lives left askew
By all the hurtful things you do
Imprisoning an innocent with ignorance and fear
Inside your religious bars
You’ve used her against us too many times
And left us with emotional scars
You torture the defenseless without excuse
We always knew your screws were loose
But never again will I endure your abuse
I’d rather dangle ‘round a noose
All fond memories have been shrouded
By a blanket of mistrust
To know that we’re related
Only fills me with disgust
It seems you’ve got no conscience within
You’ve no apologies for previous sin
You’d do it all again with a stupid grin
No remorse for betraying your own kin
No inconvenient favor was ever too much
So pray your God is as merciful as mine
For if your ‘rapture’ truly comes
You’ll be paying a hefty fine

Marilyn Hernandez Poem
It seems my Christmas spirit has gone up in smoke,
‘Cause every single Christmas I always end up broke!
To give and get a gift or two, with little or no use,
But “it’s the thought that counts,” seems to be the best excuse!
It’s just another day to splurge on Mom’s Christmas feast,
With all our favorite relatives… and the ones we like the least!
So I’m poorer and fatter on yet another day…
Oh, what the heck; I’ll enjoy the wreck of my favorite Holiday!

Marilyn Hernandez Poem
Let Him Go (Limerick)
Our mom told us how she chose her beau,
With an “eeny, meeny, miny, moe!”
Of course it didn’t last,
With a choice so half-assed!
But at least it taught the fool to grow!
Child Support (Haiku)
Parental disputes
Had placed us in the middle
Of their divorce wars
Divorce (Couplet)
He left her to fend for us alone, blasé with his remiss,
She chose to break this conjugal bond without marital bliss.

Hate
Ignorant fears
Jealousy, envy, tension
Grows into something dangerous
Death

Marilyn Hernandez Poem
I want to honestly smile
To show my laughter lines
To make them stretch and widen
Beyond any confines
I want to solemnly weep
To wear angst as my guise
To have sweet salty teardrops
Escape these arid eyes
I want to shriek and scream
To howl sharp and loud
To hear my voice break silence
Tear off this defensive shroud
I want to release these inhibitions
To live without my fear
To crack this stolid composure
So I can be sincere
I want to be utterly free
To lose all sense of control
To know what it means to be human
To live with heart and soul

Marilyn Hernandez Poem
Both the ignorant and wise
Have the nerve to criticize
But I've heard the crocodile cries
And the smiley-faced lies
Of those New York cynics
I’ve been bloodied and bruised
Wrongly blamed and bemused
Now negativity’s infused
All my patience has been used
By those New York cynics
Now I step on those stones
That once broke my bones
But I’ve become one of those drones
Just another of the clones
Yeah, I’m a New York cynic

Marilyn Hernandez Poem
The way that you’re crying,
You sound like you’re dying…
You can’t get enough of that food!
And then, when I feed you,
You say, “I don’t need you!”
And you’re in another bad mood!
Stop trying to bite me!
I think that you might be…
A little too cruel and crabby!
No matter what I say,
I’ll adore you anyway!
You’ll always be my love, Tabby!

Marilyn Hernandez Poem
There grew in a garden,
White flowers pale as death,
That grew in rows like tombstones,
Their odor; foul like dragons breath.
Flowers bent and brittle,
Stems with many a thorn,
No sweet fragrance, just a stench,
Their existence was one to mourn.
These deadly flowers spread,
The world was its domain,
Its roots had leeched all over,
And no other life could remain.
Only these flowers grew,
The earth’s soil was rotten,
This decay consumed all life.
Its plague could not be forgotten.
When it spread its poison,
Life on earth was finished,
All life had become extinct,
The whole world had been diminished.
Even though its fiction,
All this could become true,
These flowers merely symbols,
Of hate that could live within you.
Evil spreads so quickly,
To hearts that are hollow,
People want the easy life,
A route that’s easy to follow.
Evil tries to tempt you,
Disguised as a flower,
Don’t be tricked by its beauty,
Or you’ll fall under its power.
Take control of your life,
Don’t let your heart harden,
Or you’ll become this flower,
A spawn of this deadly garden.
