Michael Devenish Poem
Orange October
The words orange and October
surely a unity made in heaven
Giant pumpkin faces that light
the way up darkly garden paths.
Orange ghoulish faces, grin like
cut throat pirates, looking for
new victims. Candles flicker in
their eyes like woken evil spirits
Halloween approaches , battered orange
leaves that change like chameleons
wait for their final flight.
Destination earth .
Hot orange coloured broths , steam
filled kitchens and chunky doorstop
bread yanked angrily by hungry mouths
Awakened furnaces and coal fires
attack and spit at cold spirits
that threaten darkened studies
the month of trick or treats
a sudden nasty slap of frost
filled air leaves reddened cheeks
embarrassed .
Sunday night gentle drama watching
heartbeat springs to mind. Orange
October sounds like a soothing
chocolate bar, cosy pub bars
where locals gather and talk turns
to "it's getting parky out there "

Michael Devenish Poem
With his Arms
With grasping shovel parts
he clasped her stiffened frame
with piston arms locked upon
a body shocked through love
Tenderness approached and won
and soon her will was broken
his chest so firm was stroked
as unsaid words were passed
with bed sheets holding secrets
of one night lovers reign
