Brianna Attamante Poem
Why am I here and not there?
Because the sun shines here and
Caresses my face, freckling my skin.
Because the birds are here and
Sing promises of freedom and flight.
Because when it rains it pours and
Washes away the memories that hurt.
Because at night a sea of stars smiles down and
Reminds me of the nights of youth.
Why am I here and not there?
Because the sun there is unforgiving and
Scorches my skin, leaving it blistering and red.
Because there seagulls cry and
Break the calm and bleed my ears.
Because rain occurs in drizzles and
Teases with a taste before leaving my throat dry.
Because city lights block the stars and
Forget the magic of the heavens.
Why am I here and not there?
Because you are there and home is here.
