Genocidal Survivors

They call me Brave Heart
Not because of my courage but because it is my last name
And not because I "like" Mel Gibson that much but because it is
how I was raised.
Half black and native girl raised on the Reservation
With the beautiful people of The Oglala Lakota Nation.
Two times their tone
as a dark girl among Natives I was taught to hold my own.
You see it is the two worlds that brought me light
And it is my last name that gives me the strength to fight.
They call me Brave Heart
Like the beat of a drum
And the hold of a knot, my destiny cannot be undone.
High centered in between
A mixture of African decent and Indigenous being.
I see the greater picture
And I write the words to my own scripture.
I feel the power of my ancestors blood through my veins
And I scream out their existence in my last name. LILILILILILI
I was shackled and beaten as my African mothers
And I share in the pain of the slave trade with my sisters and brothers
Our truths will prevail through HIStory,
And we will restore our Ancestors glory.
They call me Brave Heart
But my skin and biracial split aren't what separate me from the rest
I just know that born into this life I am blessed
I am grateful for those who fought for me and our bloodline to pull through
And I am here today to fight for them too.
You cannot defeat those who are not afraid to die,
And you cannot fool those who see through lies.
Although we were hit with everything from slavery to genocide
they could still never kill Our Native and Black pride.
We know exactly who we are
Because the blood in us proves our ancestors pushed us far.
It is not over for us
We have refilled our cup,
So no matter how much you knock us down we will
Stand back up.
They call us Brave Hearts.

Akiza - a war cry used to celebrate the spirit of our ancestors and their fight- LILILILILI

My Definition

Love is the climax of my happiness,
The pinnacle of my pain..
Love is the fire in my heart with an eternal flame.

Brave Heart

My mother taught me to cry
she said pain is not something to deny

My mother taught me to forgive
because you move on in order to live

My mother taught me to love
you give all so you can get more of

My mother taught me to laugh
it brings out your better half

My mother taught me to fight
to fix my wrong with a right

My mother taught me to care
even as the odds are unfair

my mother taught to be brave,
and live my art, because
brave wouldn't be brave without a heart.

Soul

I have always been bigger than myself
much more existed than the physical felt
I am a movement that can penetrate anyone's soul
I am an energy that demands to flow
a presence you will never forget
and the rarest kind you have ever met
I have traveled with you through the times
where you asked for help but missed the signs
I am still yet speak when you need guide
as the comfortable voice you hear inside
I am all the knowledge you know
and the wisdom you wish to be
I am you, inside of me
I am the light in the darkness
and the darkness in the light
I am the stars & moon that lead you through the night
I beat in your heart as love
and reside in your mind as intellect
I give you the missing pieces you need to connect
yourself to me because i miss you ever so
the part of me that is a part of you that makes the "us"
grow

Twin Flame

their love is fire, the kind with rage
like a beautiful bird enclosed in a cage
a beauty & a beast but
beauty in the beast, to say the least
his dark made up all her shades
and her light pushed his shadows until they caved
holding her tight he diminished her fears
healing his scars as she wiped his tears
together a storm to be missed
two sparrows in a hurricane as they kissed
an electric force connects their hearts
and like the words i speak, they make art
he will love her like the wolf to the moon
and she will come to see him and leave to soon
they are soul mates, two in the same
burning beauty and rage in one flame.

Drum Beats

Your body fills with adrenaline,
Your soul starts jumping,
Against the tough hide,
There is a constant thumping,
The sound beats against your ears,
A beautiful rhythm, to my eyes brings tears,
Never will you hear anything so soothing,
Yet so spirited bound to get anyone moving.
A sound so irresistible it picks everyone out of their seats,
The beautiful, untouched whisper of drum beats.

I Wrote This In High School

this place, my sanctuary, my domain.
there's no other place i'd rather be,
than here playing the game.
love the sound of the net, when the ball hits.....
and the feel of the ball within my grip.

this place, my sanctuary, my domain.
forever for this place, i will feel the same.
want to be here and only here.....
stepping out on that floor
with no pain nor fear...

love the sound of the ball beating on the floor
and the screams of the crowd when my three pointer soars....
forever for this place i will feel the same.....
there's no other love like the love i have for this game...

Wrote This Before They Finally Realized

Christopher Colombus- Celebrating Genocide

You stepped foot on the birth canal of my ancestors,
pure, sacred, loved.
you smiled.. proceeded with greed.
your civilization like disease.
my people soon were infected
your protest to "civilize" a free nation took flight on the wings of a lie.
you told us were sent by a god.
this god, we wondered, why did he send you to destroy us?
haven't you said he was holy?
haven't you said he was your creator like tunkasila was ours?
yet you take his name and use it for power.
you believe in your great father and all that he says is right,
does he teach you genocide? massacre?
your attempt to destroy a humble people's heart failed.
although you have spilled the blood of my ancestors and forced your beliefs in front of ours
my blood flows far.
i have descended from struggles and will persevere through the desolate world you have created.
while americans celebrate your name,
i believe it is an injustice.
for they too, live in lies.
Not i. Not i who was beaten, belittled, threatened, torn, cursed, stolen.
Oh no, not i.
I stand in the land of my people as Oglala Lakota, proud, humble and heavy hearted.
for the day has yet to come where our home,
mother earth, will be reconnected with the many souls that harvested it,
loved it and praised it in thankfulness and with all honesty.
Christopher Columbus,
on the day your name is celebrated for taking our home,
i hang my head,
in my many days...
your day has never been and will never be,
 a good day to die.

Ballad of the Lakota Nation

We people long before born here,
hunting lands for our eat.
our heavens above shed us tears,
and life began to beat.

Heavens gave to them purest birth,
above they warm my skin.
calling to me as mother earth,
I beat their heart within.

Nourished by the mother we live,
grateful for all we own.
we live on to all that she gives,
her body is our home.

All my children work day to day,
to keep our ways alive.
carrying with them much of pay,
from burden of a strive

Lost

from the day i was born i have been lost
searching for a home in anyone no matter the cost
wanting that nurture a child yearns for
wanting less loneliness but receiving more
a dark child left by her mother
a dark child given to another
but a young mind is never deterred
until a hateful heart says it must be stirred
and then it all begins
a hate for yourself starts growing within
why must i be dark? why must i be left?
why must i be different from the rest?
from the day i was born i have been lost
searching for a home in anyone no matter the cost
the girl they talk about, the girl they hate
the girl that has known a lifetime of heartbreak
my own people, same struggles.. same land
denied me acceptance and failed to understand
that i am not defined by my dark tone
nor the fact they leave me alone
because you see i may weary astray
but i know their blood and my blood beat the same
i have not learned hate for my own, no matter the past
because you see part of living is loosening your grasp
from the day i was born i have been here
searching for a home in anyone no matter the fear
