To the Medical Student

We bust ours
To help theirs.
Masters of the all-nighter,
Supporters of caffeine.
Sleep is but another word,
Far less important than fascia.
Pushing ourselves
For that extra tenth of a grade.
Somehow it doesn’t matter,
Those wise-second years tell us.
The boards will level us all,
Make our efforts worthless they say…
Our noses to our 700 pages of biochemistry,
Our pens doodling on our useless behavioral medicine books…
We ignore them, pushing on.
Together we have arrived…
With one goal in mind…
To make tons of money and marry super models…
Err,
To bust ours,
So we can help theirs…

Ultimate Sacrifice

In the end,
Her body too frail...
She looked for another way to live.
A world I can help...
If only I give myself.
Prod me,
Probe me,
Learn from me.
In the end,
Her body too frail,
She gave herself so that we may learn.
Touched,
Studied,
She revealed her secrets.
Through us,
She lives on.
Through her,
Others may live.
Though she may be gone,
I will never forget her ultimate sacrifice....

Ode To Writer's Block

Cross out
Erase
Start over.
Ideas just wont flow,
The pen just wont write.
Correction won't write.
New paper,
New pen,
Damn this wind
Close that window!
Where was I?
A million thoughts
And not one makes sense.
Where is my Thesaurus?
What the hell rhymes with time?
Lime
Dime
Mime,
Forget time!
Hell of a headache,
I need an aspirin.
Make that a shot,
Or two,
Or three
Where was I?
Cross out
Erase
Start over

Oh Loneliness

When I look in the mirror,
You are there.
When I sleep,
You are there.
I try to take off my skin
But you will not disappear.
I do not invite you,
But always come.
I ask you to leave,
But you stay.
I have tried to be forceful,
I have tried to be kind.
In the end I have realized,
I will not win.
I sat down today and wrote you a letter:
Oh loneliness,
Thou art a true friend,
Ever there when I am down…
Never to leave my side,
No matter how hard I try to push you away….

Enough

You ask me to bleed,
I cut myself.
You ask me to suffer,
I put the first nail in.
I have given all that I am,
Yet you ask for more.
My dream,
You are.
My future,
You were.
Never enough,
You needed more.
You have taken away my right to be,
What am I supposed to do now?
Hollow shell,
Empty of care…
Devoid of soul.
Dried out,
No more tears to cry…
Cold heart,
No more blood to squeeze.
I tried to let go,
You held on.
You tried to let go,
I held on.
Messed up.
Where do I go from here?
Sometimes I wish you would go,
Other times I pray for help.
Falling to my knees,
Sometimes I just wish it was all…
Enough.

Missing You

Late night phone calls
Red-eye plane flights.
Bag searches
Metal detectors.
As time rolls on...
The distance stays the same...
Insurmountable.
Lonely in my bed,
I toss.
Lonely in my mind,
I wish.
Though we cannot touch,
I see you in my thoughts.
Though we cannot kiss,
I hold you in my dreams.
Together or apart...
Our hearts beat as one.
Here now and forever,
I shall miss you and love...
You.

Another Rain Soaked Letter

Another rain soaked letter
Delivered to the woman in black boots...
The much awaited package.
Eager hands tear the envelope
Parchment is hastily unfolded.
More than a letter
A statement of love meets her eyes.
Ink is soaked by salty tears...
Emotion poured through a pen.
From the text,
She hears his voice.
Through the words,
She feels his breath...
Pressed against her ear,
He is with her again.
She pulls the letter to her chest
Sobbing deep...
Another rain soaked letter
And the distance melts.
Another tear soaked parchment,
And somehow she knows...
Everything is going to be okay....

As the Child Dances

Life is too serious he thought,
As the coffin was opened in front of him.
No longer do we marvel at a child's laugh,
Watch the rain fall,
Get lost in the beauty of each other.
Life is too serious he thought,
As the pine door was opened.
No longer do we dance just to dance,
No longer do we laugh just to laugh,
No longer are us just to be us.
Life is too serious he thought,
As he stared into his brother's cold face.
No longer do we love for free,
No longer do enjoy unsolicited...
No longer, until it is too late....

The Lonely Woman

A perfect crystal of moving liquid,
Falling from her eye,
Casscading down her cheek to land on the ground...
Salty remorse,
Wet pity,
He is no where to be found.
The tears continue.
One for each new scar in her heart,
One for each new hole in her soul.
Her heart shutters with each sob,
Like tender china...breaking.
Another crystal tear...
Another scar...
Another memory gone from the one that left her...
Another hole in her tender soul, never to be replaced...

Without a Home

Sticky matted hair,
Sweat from weeks past
Sticks to his face.
Like so many files he swats at them.
Shifting through the piles
Human refuge...
Unknown horror and unseen disease
Forgotten for an apple core...
A few cans…
The currency of the street.
His home on wheels pushed,
His life
You scoff at making haste to the opposite side,
Lazy
He must be.
Warm coat, home and car...
All await you...
Wet papers, boxes and carts...
His life.
Like so many files he swats them away...
Moving on to his next treasure...
