A Warm Winter

A lifeless morning,
a lifeless me;
With the last of leaves
crumbling away,
Swayed by the wind
from the land of the dead.

The cold’s scorching breath
stung against my skin,
Yet I moved not
an inch or two;
Like a statue
Frozen in time,
A victim to the Medusa,
I stood still.

Before me,
A giant creature,
Twice as big
My courage and
Twice as strong
My heart:

At first a fiend,
Then a loving friend;
Man’s best companion,
Since the days of old…
And thus
Never again will my winters be so cold.
