Taffy - Ode To My Dog

The first best friend I ever had,
you run miles in my dreams
You're by my side, you wait for me
You're loyal, you've always been

You never speak a complaining word
and your eyes always smile
You love me unconditionally,
You're open, like a child

And you'll live on here in my heart
for all my days on earth
Not Solomon's mines, nor Fort Knox gold
could equal a good dog's worth

Tears of a Child

I hear
Each night she cries
Tears like crystalline rain;
They pierce my heart like frozen knives,
Sink deep

Spanish Lullaby - Tender Grace

Little one I am here
you are not alone
Mama will guard your sleep
and you are safe at home
I will hold you closely
in protective arms
and keep precious baby
from harm

Trees slowly nod
in the sighing wind
Now the sun has gone
you must rest again
Seeing sweet contentment
on your drowsy face
I'm breathless with the moment's
tender grace

Stars gently wink
in the silver sky
look up above,
watch the moon climb high
close your eyes now, my darling
and drift off to dreams
in peace as I watch
over thee

Winter Rose

The cold is coming on
the wind is moaning high above
the frozen days are long,
let's build a fire, my love

When winter's gone
will you still keep me warm?
When dark skies clear,
will you leave with the storm?

Outside, our noses freeze
a chill comes whistling through
in drifts up to our knees,
hot when I look at you

When winter's gone,
will you still linger on?
As spring arrives then
where will you be found?

The snow floats gently down
each white lace flake unique
There's no one else around
and we've no need to speak

The sky holds icy stars
that gleam against the crystal blue
the city lights are far
and I'm closer to you

When winter's gone,
will memories stay long?
When icy streams thaw,
will I be alone?

Observation Point

Silent faces move en masse across the tired street,
each forging its own neural pathway
through the twisting brain
of this metropolis

The engines of commerce roll on
with a hustling buzz
vehicles intent on arrival
diverge onto the concrete arteries and veins
that entwine the city

From high above the traffic,
I watch the travelers flowing over rivers of asphalt
streaming with grim purpose
toward myriad destinations

How like Rome is our modern civilization,
awaiting its own fall
Dusty sandals have become
polished Italian leather
marching inexorably
toward the devastation
that man’s hubris wreaks.

The Amber Forest

When the gray city oppresses me
when the sounds of traffic
and shouting people intrude,
when it all seems to close in....

I drift back to the ocean in my mind
where beams of sunlight
glimmer through liquid crystal
where giant kelp bows in the current
and a rainbow of fish gather to hunt and play

I too belong in the amber forest;
for there the infinite aqua mirrors my soul.

Breaking the Surface

He binds my hands and wrists behind me
struggling to escape I see
the fury of the coming storm
arising high beyond the trees

I know too well the chance I take
when I accept a stranger's ride
beneath my knees, cold earth awaits
for this will be the night I die

As the growing black enfolds me
stars are blinking far above
Goodbye, earth and sky and music
Goodbye, everyone I love

Something murmurs very gently
while I spiral further down
voice and spirit leave my body
as in Death's dark pool I drown

Just before my flame's extinguished
what, I wonder, is my purpose?
with that riddle left to answer
I fight hard and break the surface

Breathe again the cool, moist air
feel my own blood fill my mouth
gasping for the breath I lost
as my life almost flickered out

As I look about I find
to my relief, I'm quite alone
with ragged edges of my mind
I long for those who wait at home

Lying still beneath the pale moon,
waiting for the sun to rise
knowing Dawn approaches soon,
I think about the night I died

And though I almost left this world
I'm far too numb to feel the fear
I realize because of me
a fool was almost buried here

Predator In Hinterland

Winged shadow over yellow moon
cold stars glow against deepening blue
Icy breath hovers like drifting steam
Silent talons end winters dream

Shell With a View

The turtle never lacks a space
her house is carried behind her face

She takes it on her daily route
while never really going out

She isn't vain, in fact she's humble,
not too graceful, sometimes stumbles

Can't run far; she isn't swift
But she does have a special gift

And very few can make this claim:
her house and car are both the same!
