Jackie Faasisila Poem
LOST IN LOVE
Winter is over
The rains have stopped
Flowers now in bloom
His voice calls out my name
His tender lips touch mine
His caresses soft and warm
Delightfully sublime
Smothered with his kisses
Sweet as the taste of wine
Love is wild flower
Untouched by tests of time
He brought me to his banquet
Filled with sweetness from above
“Drink deep, oh my darling
Let us lose ourselves in love.”

Jackie Faasisila Poem
Life’s path is arduous
Mountains loom before us all
Together we must forge a pathway
To the mountain tall
Walk with footsteps heavy
Scenery sometimes dull
On clear days all goes smoothly
How pleasant it can be
To dance with feet light-footed
Atop peaks we never thought we’d see
Cloudy times are puzzling
Uncertainty around the bend
Ever confident sparkling surprises
Lie at the journey’s end

Jackie Faasisila Poem
A MOTHER’S WORDS
A mother’s words can be hurtful
Or make you feel high
They can give you strength and courage
Or make you want to die
A mother’s words stay with you
When you are far away
They can be words of wisdom
Or ones to spoil your day
My mother’s words still puzzle me
I don’t think she meant to be unkind
I wish she never had said them
I tried really not to mind.
I was never good enough
To win her words of praise
She loved the others more than me
Through all our childhood days
I tried not to let words hurt me
Some were hard to bear
Often when she'd speak to me
I wished I wasn’t there
She filled me with trepidation
Tried to instill fear
Words harsh and unflattering
For a child’s ears to hear
I’d turn away dejected
Uncertain of my worth
She praised my other siblings
God’s blessings they were on earth
I never met her expectations
Even when things I did were great
Her view of me was negative
I tried hard not to hate
I longed for her recognition
for the things that I had done
Or simple congratulations
for honors I had won
Now that I am old and grown
With children of my own
Supportive words I try to speak
To show how much I care
I remember my dejection
How her spirit made me frown
I vowed my words would never -- ever
Tear my children down

Jackie Faasisila Poem
Once isolated from the world
In tune with nature
Living day to day
Self sufficient
Thrust into a globalized world
New opportunities, open markets
Technological advances
Loss of control
Terrrorism
Disease
The pace of life quickens
Daylight hours changed
Individualism and accumulation
Destabilizing forces
Confusion, vulnerability
Our sense of wonder lost
Family structures undermined
Dependent on remittances
Change laps island shores
From all directions
East and west; old and new;
Modernity and tradition
Fragments of culture scattered
Like pieces of a puzzle
Understood only when the last piece
Is put in place

Jackie Faasisila Poem
CYCLONE HAIKUS
Mighty trees once proud
No match for destructive winds
Toppled to the ground
Loud and angry howls
Powerful and mighty gusts
All heads bow in fear
Winds rage night and day
No way to cover our ears
To drown out the sound

Jackie Faasisila Poem
BEING ME
Deeper than skin colour
Hidden behind a mask of white
Native blood surges from my soul
Part of a world I can never fully embrace
The real me hidden
The legacy of a proud warrior people
Crushed by the conquest of men white
Drowned by alcohol and violence
Robbed of language, land and knowledge
Left with destruction and pain
I struggle for a place to belong
My cocoon of comfort and security
Strangled by stereotypes and unrealistic standards
Not brown enough to be one of them
Bigotry and hate
I search for acceptance and authenticity
Either I am or I am not
On the outskirts looking in - fragmented
Torn between imposter and real
Trapped in a body white
The journey of becoming life long
Identity ever changing
The search for the uniqueness
Of who I am
Never ending

Jackie Faasisila Poem
LOVE UNSPOKEN
Love speaks softly; creeps slowly
Hearts willingly open themselves
To another’s hopes and dreams
Share heartaches and pain
Multiply happiness and gain
A smile, a touch, a warm embrace
Flowers, gratitude, tears
Love unspoken

Jackie Faasisila Poem
In a world of shifting values
Follow the impulses of your heart
Worry not about the views of others
Or how foolish dreams may seem
Strive not to change the world
Or overcome defeat
Be content to keep the world
from changing you
Listen to your heart

Jackie Faasisila Poem
One must cry for environmental refugees
Forced to leave their homelands, lives, and culture
Still remembering the smell of food
Sizzling over open fires
The sounds of roosters who never slept
Coconut trees swaying gently
In the evening breeze
The crimson colours of the sunset
That gave sailors warning
Or was it delight
The myriad shades of the blue ocean
Shimmering in noonday sun
Unwelcome in a foreign land
Where they longed to remember
The warmth of family
One’s native language rolling naturally
From the tongue
Sweetness to the ears
The blues and greens of home
Afraid, hurting and homesick
Their futures colorless and grim
