The Eye of the Temptress

Weary of sleep, I trudge on and on
Finding no haven, the last remnants of hope gone
When suddenly I see an inn embracing the bay
“Descend here at ‘The Temptress’”, it says
At the very entrance is a portrait of a mistress
The place, they say is named after this temptress
But alas! She is no more the writing below the portrait states
So saddening are the words ‘Late Miss Mary Brace’
I enter and order myself a gin
The temptress’s beauty plundering my mind like sin
Gin after gin, down my throat it flows
Outside the wind and storm bellows
With time I feel someone’s gaze upon me
I turn back and it is a figure in black it seems
Clad in a veil, hidden in darkness
Mystery emanating from her in all its bountifulness
She gets up and prepares to leave
Midway, halts in her trail, looks back and beckons me
Hypnotised I follow, the gin making me sway
I try and see her face but to no avail
Her footsteps echo against the earthen floor
In symphony with the thunder outside that roars
She turns a corner and a flash of light falls on her face
But all I can see is her eye, a sparkling green jade
Familiarity strikes me, I have seen her before!
With no answer, my mind is rattled to the core
When she slowly lifts her veil
My heart threatens to burst when I see it is Mary Brace!
She hovers in the air, her frame surrounded by a glow
Before she finally disappears in a whirl of mist and snow.

The House of the Dead

At the doorstep the little girl sits
Misled by a false hope
Daddy will come soon
And gather into his arms his sweet dove
What will he bring for her today?
A flower? A bar of chocolate?

The young wife grows silent as the night
Grief pouring out of her eyes
Her youth, her dreams lost
Just like that, in a flash
Wishing she could be like the little girl
Too young to understand death and demise

Shuzbee wonders why his master aint home yet
His wagging tail drops down
His ears alert to pick up the silliest sound
Its time to play fetch
Shouldn’t master be walking up the path right now?
Flattening the grass?

A silence hangs over the house
Death eminent from a mile away
The air is heavy
Deprived of breath
A step into the house of the deceased
And you feel the chill of the dead

Epiphany of Doom

She was falling into the black hole

Slowly at first, then fast

Arms as black as coal

They were cold and sharp

Pierced her with all the hate they could muster

They had never seen the light of day

All life they wanted to shatter

She was losing this endless game

Her soul was leaving her body

She could see the devil dawn

Its red eyes glaring at her

She was nothing but a mere pawn

Her body touched the brim of forgetfulness

And she drew in a startled breath

Her legs twitched like she had woken up from an illness

And she found herself in her bed!

Sweat lined her brows

She heaved a sigh of relief

But what she didn’t see was

Her lifeless body on the sheet
