Taming Flowers

there's not a flower
can't grow wild
thrive neglected and ignored
but how much better
some can do when caged
tied to stakes
and pruned
their buds collected
to encourage growth
the sun, the rain, the earth
and care and harvesting
no less important
to renew the bloom.

Working On a Boat

There’s no end to worry, when working on a boat.
The relentless sea is always busy,
Eager to embrace her,
Constantly reminding you that ownership is an illusion,
Challenging you to preserve her with
Perception and attention
Before that limitless horizon
Overwhelms her, unimpressed with the
Purity of your desire.
And even when she's trimmed just right,
The bright work polished,
The wind and ocean harnessed in her sails,
And plunging through that vastness,
Adjustments are required,
Your hand on her tiller
Keeping her heeled over
In the slip stream,
Her tell-tails fluttering,
And all that ocean beckoning.

The Ecstasy of Trees

Have you ever seen the way
The tender leaves all tremble
In the gentlest of breezes
And then gather, intensify that windy gesture
Until finally the tree itself bows down?
Can you hear her moan and whimper,
Feel her ecstasy,
As she bends and comes alive,
Her strength challenged, tested,
Springing back at last for more?
